You may in your research online come across the term "Tanking". This reference is for a waterproofing system and is more of a European phrase than a North American phrase. Tanking and waterproofing can be used hand in hand and one can replace the other.
"How will you be tanking the shower?" "How will you be waterproofing the shower" no difference between the two.
It is no surprise to many that our friends in Europe are ahead of the curve in many aspects of life. Music. Fashion. Heating Systems. Wet Rooms. And of course Tanking.
There is a great online website that caters to UK tile men and I have been a member there for a few years. I find I need to do a lot of looking words up to understand the process and have found that the European setters prefer for the most part these liquid tanking kits.
A basic tanking kit will include a flashing piece that ties into the drain, some corner banding both inside and outside corners and a liquid membrane. Tanking a shower or bathroom is not something that can be done quickly or a process that can be rushed.
Every shower or wet-room that has been waterproofed (or tanked) needs to and should be flood tested. This process is made very simple with the use of a liquid membrane and a product like Mapeband.
This slide show movie above shows a tanked room with Mapei's Aquadefence waterproofing. The Mapeband is the blue and white band you see.
Installing a temporary dam to flood test your new tanking efforts is easy with these products. Here is how we set them.
If you want to measure the evaporation and mark the level of the flood test my last post should help you with that.
Good luck on your next shower project - Happy Tanking....
